The CN Tower (French: Tour CN) is a 553.3 m-high (1,815.3 ft) concrete communications and observation tower located in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Built on the former Railway Lands, it was completed in 1976. Its name “CN” originally referred to Canadian National, the railway company that built the tower. Following the railway’s decision to divest non-core freight railway assets prior to the company’s privatization in 1995, it transferred the tower to the Canada Lands Company, a federal Crown corporation responsible for real estate development.

The CN Tower held the record for the world’s tallest free-standing structure for 32 years until 2007 and was the world’s tallest tower until 2009 being overtaken by Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower, respectively. It is now the ninth tallest free-standing structure in the world and remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. In 1995, the CN Tower was declared one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It also belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.

Building history

On February 22, 1974, the work of casting concrete was completed, and the construction of the world’s tallest tower entered the “tapping” stage of installing a total of 102 meters (355 feet) of giant broadcast antennas. These antennas will consist of 44 large metal blocks, the heaviest of which weighs 8 tons.

At 9:52 am on March 31, 1975, the height of the CN Tower finally broke the world record and officially became the first tallest tower. Three days later, the workers working in the cold space on the spires of the spires greeted the last piece of metal antennas and were lifted into the sky. The high-altitude welder Paul Mitchell became the last lucky one on the CN Tower on April 2nd.

December 1975, decoration.

In 1994, a panoramic glass perspective floor was installed in the tower for the first time.

Two new elevators were added in 1996 to meet the growing number of tourists.

An advanced security system was installed in 2002.

In 2006, in order to meet the growing needs of meetings and events held here, new conference venues were added.

In 2007, the installation of a new energy-efficient semiconductor architectural lighting system brought great changes to Toronto’s fascinating night scenes.

Building structure

The TV tower consists of a pedestal, an Observation Tower, a Sky pod and an antenna tower from top to bottom.

The pedestal is a triangular column with a souvenir shop, fast food restaurant, small movie hall, children’s playground and large electronic display screens that report weather conditions and time around the world.

At the top of the sky cover is the TV transmitting antenna, which is 102 meters high and is made up of 42 steel frames. It is said that when it was installed, it was completed by helicopter. Looking from the ground, the antenna tower is silver, like a sword, straight into the blue sky.
Top elevator
Since April 2008, the CN Tower has been running North America’s first and the world’s tallest glass floor elevator, providing visitors from all over the world with a new experience of “the world’s top elevator journey”. The renovation of the elevator is mainly concentrated on the elevator floor of 3.64 square meters (39.25 square feet) – two pieces of glass with a thickness of about 5.08 cm and an area of about 0.6 square meters will be embedded in the elevator floor, visitors can see through the glass floor at a glance Look at all the landscape outside the elevator. The elevator rises at an average speed of 22 kilometers per hour (15 miles). In just 58 seconds, passengers can reach the top of the 346-meter (1,136-foot) tower. This elevator travel is well-deserved as the “world’s top elevator tour.”

The project adheres to the highest international safety standards, with a duration of 1.5 hours and an outdoor walk of approximately 30 minutes.
