Porte Cailhau
The door Cailhau (port deu Calhau in 1450) or door of the Palace is a door of the city of Bordeaux, in the French department of Gironde. It is classified historic building since May 28, 1883.

Situation
The Cailhau Gate stands on the Palace Square on the river side. Located between the mouths of the two main rivers of Bordeaux, the Peugue (course of Alsace and Lorraine) and Devèze (street of the Currency), it was the main entrance in the city since the port. It gave access to the Palace of the Ombrière, residence of the dukes of Guyenne, then seat of the Parliament of Bordeaux from 1462.
At the time, the vertical docks did not exist. The bank sloped down towards the river and it was light boats that unloaded ships anchored in the river.

Toponymy
The name of the tower means pebble (calhau in gascon). It is given to the wharf situated between the two rivers, which was called the Quai da Caillau (Pebble) because, because of its usefulness, it was the first to be paved with pebbles of the river.
This name is shared with the great bourgeois family of Bordeaux medieval Cailhau who gave several mayors to the city (thirteenth – fourteenth centuries).

History
The original door was located in the wall of the fourteenth century. It was replaced by the current monument, built closer to the Garonne between 1493 and 1496.
It was decorated with a white marble statue of Charles VIII to commemorate his victory in 1495 at the Battle of Fornoue against the Italians. The statue, broken in 1793 was replaced by a stone copy in 1880.

Description
From an architectural point of view, it is a Gothic-Renaissance transition monument: machicolations along the entire perimeter of the tower, portcullis, skylights and loopholes betray its defensive character directly inherited from the Middle Ages. While the accolades above the mullioned windows, the slender roof with elegant turrets or the flamboyant canopies above the niches already announce a more decorative character of the Renaissance.
On its facade, city side, we can see in the center a fleur-de-lis escutcheon worn by two angels.
On the river side, there are several statues: Charles VIII, Saint John the Evangelist and Cardinal of Epernay, Archbishop of Bordeaux, who was with the king during the battle of Fornoue.
With its roofs, the door reaches 35 meters high.
It served as both a defensive door and triumphal arch (presence of a niche with the effigy of the king).
