History
The project to build a cultural and tourist wine center was born in 2009.
A prefiguration association of La Cité du Vin was created for this purpose, composed of the Aquitaine region, Bordeaux Métropole, the city of Bordeaux, the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bordeaux .
Its aim was to ensure, through the construction of a monument, an intermediary between the museum world and the theme park, “the transmission, enhancement and safeguarding of the cultural, universal and living heritage of wine”.

Construction

The chosen site is located on the site of the old forges of the great maritime port of Bordeaux19, in the new district of the Bassins afloat, on the islet between the Bacalan quay, the entrance of the locks and the Garonne.
The shape of the building, all curves, outside and inside, was designed by the architects of the agency XTU (Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières) and by the English agency scenography Casson Mann Limited who have wanted to make it an emblematic building with high visibility. The two agencies were selected by project management competition in May 2011.
The structure has a form of vine gnarled vine “to recall both a wine turning in a glass and the swirls of the Garonne, which borders the site.”
The 9,000 m3 concrete building is supported by 300 concrete piles down to 30 meters deep.
