History
Édouard Ducpétiaux, appointed in 1830 Inspector General of Prisons and Charitable Institutions will be the propagator of Anglo-Saxon know-how in the construction of prisons. He is particularly interested in the panoptic prison architecture that will be behind the construction of the prison to replace that of the Petits-Carmes located near the courthouse in Brussels.

Construction
The prison of Saint-Gilles was built between 1878 and 1884. The initial plans were designed by the architect Joseph Jonas Dumont (1811-1859) and then made by François Derré. It marked the first stage of the creation of the southern district which will welcome in 1904 the Town Hall of the municipality of Saint-Gilles.
The facade, 235 meters long, was built in the style pseudo-Tudor still called “neo-medieval”. Indeed, it recalls that of a castle with its crenellated towers, loopholes and machicoulis. At the rear of this first building, there is a five-branched radial architecture, each housing 120 cells. Each of the wings converging on the central panoptic core. In 1910, with a view to replacing the prison of the minims of Brussels, a new building was built on the territory of Forest on the same general principles of construction. This included 400 cells (270 for men, 130 for women). The two complexes are connected by an underground at the origin of the name of the Avenue of the junction.
The prison of Saint-Gilles is surrounded by a rectangular wall of 6 m high and 960 meters long, a corner is cut to the south. At the end of each wing is a vast circular courtyard, of which only one remains today.
