Opéra national de Lorraine 洛林國家歌劇院
Opéra national de Lorraine is an opera company and opera house located in the city of Nancy in the French province of Lorraine. Formerly named the Opéra de Nancy et de Lorraine, it was given the status of “national opera” in 2006.
The company’s original theatre was constructed during the reign of the King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, Stanislas Leszczyński in 1758. This theatre, located behind the Museum of Fine Arts, was destroyed by fire in October 1905 and a new opera house was constructed in its present location on the Place Stanislas by Joseph Hornecker and was inaugurated in 1919.
Joseph Hornecker, a member of the “School of Nancy,” created the opera house in the classical style combined with characteristics of “art nouveau”. The work done in Nancy made it a center of art and architecture that rivaled Paris and helped give the city the nickname “Capitale de l’Est.”
The opera house underwent restoration in 1994.
All productions are accompanied by the Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy.

Architecture
Although an artist of the School of Nancy, Joseph Hornecker created an opera in the respect of the classical style, of which only the “oriental bar” presents the characteristics of the new art. The building has been classified as a historic monument since December 26, 1923.

Reconstruction of a new theater
The location of the new theater is the source of a series of controversies. Indeed, some would like a location more central to the development of the city, but many believe it is essential to keep the opera scene in the heart of the historic district of the city of Nancy, built at the height of the reign of Stanislas . The separation of Church and State will settle the controversy, since in 1909, the State takes possession of the Hotel des Fermes (formerly belonging to the Bishopric), which will allow the maintenance of the Opera Stanislas Square, opposite the old building destroyed by the flames, a few years ago.
The new theater was inaugurated on October 14, 1919 because of the First World War which delayed its construction. The facade of the opera has not been destroyed, it is that of the old building. One can believe that the building is the object of a real architectural work thanks to the big rooms like the hearth where no beam is apparent. If this opera did not include all these golden and velvet decorations, the visitor could see reinforced concrete walls (the material that covers these walls is called “cardboard-stone”).
