The Complex Construction of Zaha Hadid’s One Thousand Museum Tower to be Featured in New Documentary
With construction now well underway on One Thousand Museum in Miami, one of Zaha Hadid’s largest projects to be completed posthumously, Curbed has reported that the 62-story tower will be the subject of an upcoming Discovery/PBS documentary covering the creation of complex structures from around the world. Titled “Impossible Builds,” the program will highlight the building’s unique glass fiber reinforced concrete exoskeleton.

Following the ground breaking last December, construction has begun on Zaha Hadid’s One Thousand Museum in Miami, with 9,500 cubic yards of concrete already poured. Designed in association with the local architect of record, O’Donnell Dannwolf Partners Architects, the residential skyscraper will rise 62 stories, comprising half- and full-floor residences, duplex townhomes, and a single duplex penthouse, overlooking Museum Park and Biscayne Bay at 1000 Biscayne Boulevard.

One Thousand Museum by Zaha Hadid Architects is a high-rise residential condominium under construction in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. The deep foundation required drilling to record depths of over 170 feet (52 m). The 62-story building is expected to rise over 700 feet (210 m) when completed in 2018, making it one of the tallest buildings in Miami. The depths of two auger-cast piles broke a record for Miami-Dade County that had recently been set by the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach. The building, which is located at 1000 Biscayne Boulevard, across from Museum Park, was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. The exotic design of the building features a curving exoskeleton partially obscuring the balconies that also serves structural purposes, allowing the interior space to have fewer columns.The effect of the design and height on wind loading is part of the reason the foundation had to be exceptionally deep.[6] The building is considered ultra-luxury, containing about 83 large units priced at about double the cost per square foot of nearby condominium towers, with amenities possibly including a rooftop helipad.

Much of the enclosure is set back from the face of the exoskeleton with the glazing system being abutted and sealed to the structure, thus allowing for apartments to be self-shaded. The exoskeleton is expressed inside with the GFRC entering apartments. It can also be touched. (There’s no fear of heat loss through thermal bridging in Miami.) Balconies are further recessed, “almost created as depressions behind the structure,” Lépine said, and result in the glass facade folding and faceting behind. “There is a nice interplay between the two materials, as well as with how light casts down upon the structure and fenestration,” he added.
Aside from palatial living units, One Thousand Museum is laden with luxury amenities: thirty thousand square feet of communal areas, including a two-story aquatic center, a sky lounge, a multimedia theater, a wellness spa, gym facilities, and a private event space—naturally, a “bank quality” vault is also included.
Ground broke on the building in December 2014. During the summer of 2015, one thousand trucks rolled onto site to pour 9,500 cubic yards of concrete in 24 hours to start the One Thousand Museum’s foundational work. The building is currently due for completion in 2018.
